Victoria is the smallest state on the Australian mainland and is located on the South East coast of Australia. Despite its size, Victoria is one of Australia's leading agricultural states. Wheat, grown largely in the north-east is the most important crop, followed by oats, barley, fruits, and vegetables. The population is relatively large with approximately 5.1 million people living in an area of 228,000 sq km.
Though Victoria is small in size, the state offers everything from 32 national parks and surf beaches to stunning scenic lakes and mountains. Most people come to visit Victoria for its natural attraction, history and local food and wine.
Settlement in Victoria began in 1830 with the first permanent colony founded being Melbourne in 1835 by John Batman and John Pascoe Fawnker. The state was named after the Queen of England and the first town was named after her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne in 1837. In 1851 gold was discovered near Ballarat and led to migrants arriving from all over the world to search for gold.
Victoria has a varied climate which ranges from semi-arid and hot in the north-west to temperate and cool along the coast. Victoria's main land feature, the Great Dividing Range, produces a cooler mountain climate in the centre of the state.
