Overview

Unlike most of the world, in the UK we drive on the left hand side of the road. this can make it confusing for those driving within the Uk for the first time. Most road junctions in the UK display signs telling you whether to stop or give way. Many junctions and crossroads in the UK are replaced by roundabouts, where you must give way to the vehicles coming from the right and drive round in a clockwise direction.

Regulations

The following is a brief summary of the main road rules that apply in the UK:

  • It is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol.  You must be warned that the police in the UK are extremely strict when it comes to drink driving and breathalyse most drivers if they pulled over whilst driving.  The best policy in the UK is not to drink at all if you intend to drive.  Even one pint of beer or glass of wine could take you over the legal limit.
  • It is illegal to use a mobile phone when you are driving unless you are using a hands-free kit.
  • Speed limits in built up areas are normally 30 mph (40 km/h) , on  a main road  40 mph (64 km/h) and on all motorways 70 mph ( 112 km/h ).  Always watch out for signs above the motorway indicating a reduction in the speed limit due to heavy road traffic, poor weather or a road traffic accident ahead.
  • Drivers and all passengers must wear seatbelts and children under 1.35 meters tall or up to 12 years of age must use a properly fitted child’s car seat.
  • If you are driving a vehicle in UK, you must be covered by insurance in a form of green card or by a UK Insurance Company.  If you are renting a car, you will most probably be covered by their insurance policy but we recommend that you always check with the rental company.
  • If you have a foreign driving licence and want to drive in UK, you need to apply for a UK driving licence. You must complete the application form D1 which is produced by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVLA).  You can obtain this form from all Post Offices.

Getting a Driving Licence

Before you can learn to drive, you will need to apply for a provisional driving licence. You can apply for a driving licence only if you are at least 17 years old. When you apply for a driving licence, you will need to tell DVLA about any medical conditions that could effect your driving. There are two parts to the process of obtaining a driving licence.  Firstly, you will need to pass a theory test and then a practical test. You will need to pay a fee for each part of the test.
