Overview

If you are an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, you may be eligible to sponsor a loved one to move permanently to Australia. Sponsoring a partner or relative can be a very confusing process. You will need to understand your limitations and obligations as a sponsor and your partner or relative will need to understand their obligations and entitlements.

Child Migration

To sponsor a child for permanent migration the child must be the natural, adopted or step-child of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Are you adopting a child from overseas? You can apply for an adoption visa to allow your adopted child to move with you to Australia once you have been approved for adoption.

There may be unfortunate circumstances where you as an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen may need to provide a home for an orphaned relative. If the child is under 18 years of age and has no parent to care for them, sponsorship can be applied.

Family Migration

Visa categories exist for aged dependent relatives, remaining relatives who have no near relatives other than relatives residing in Australia, or if you are willing and able to give substantial, continuing assistance to an Australian relative, who has a medical condition that is causing physical, intellectual or sensory impairment of their ability to attend to the practical aspects of daily life.

There are age and situational requirements that must be met under these categories.

Parent Migration

There are two broad groups for visa classes under parent migration, these groups are the parent category and the contributory parent category.

The difference between the two categories is mainly that the contributory parent category has higher application fees and three times the visa places as the regular parent visa category.

Partner and Spouse Migration

There are several visas available for partners and spouses of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens who wish to move permanently to Australia through sponsorship from their partner or spouse.

Do you identify with one of the following scenarios?

  • You plan to marry your Australian partner?
  • You are legally married to your Australian partner?
  • You have been cohabitating with your Australian partner for the last 12 months?

In most cases 2 year provisional visas will be granted to you [the applicant], if you are still in a relationship with your Australian partner you can apply for permanent residency to remain in Australia indefinitely.

There are some exceptions that will allow you to apply directly for permanent residency at the start of the application process.

We encourage you to contact our office so that we can match you with the correct visa.
